​​Science and enterprise are closely linked. Understanding the business landscape ahead of you is a real asset.

​This module takes you beyond the laboratory. You will explore what it means to develop a research or business idea from the ground up.

​Drawing on the Business Model Canvas framework, you will:

  • ​research and pitch your own concept
  • ​explore the importance of intellectual property
  • ​examine key trends and developments across the life sciences sector

​You will seek out information, form your own views, and develop your ideas through writing, presenting and reflection.

​The module is delivered in partnership with the Careers Service (Skills Hub) and the Centre for Entrepreneurship.

​What you will learn

​In this module, you will:

  • ​develop your understanding of the business side of science. This will allow you to think beyond your course
  • ​explore key trends and developments within the life sciences sector
  • ​research and develop your own business or research idea using the Business Model Canvas framework

​By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • ​explain the importance of intellectual property. You will understand how it applies to scientific and business ideas
  • ​show an understanding of key developments and trends in the life sciences sector
  • ​apply research and critical thinking skills to design a business idea
  • ​write a business model canvas report to a professional standard
  • ​deliver a confident presentation of your business concept
  • ​show reflective thinking and evidence your skills in an employer-recognised format​
